I am very concerned about dignity at the end of life.
The only reason there is an issue at all are the Good Folks
who deem themselves to be "Christians" who think they
know what is best for me because of some obscure beliefs.
That I believe is the only reason there is no movement on
the growing numbers of people who believe in death with dignity at
the end of life. After all it is votes that count in ruling our country
not what is right for me. Votes rule decisions ; not what is right.

I was listening to Gloria Taylor (in the Carter constitutional challenge) speak about her truly debilitating disease. I can agree that life can be unbearable, my mother died with ALS. Even for those people with mental illness (depression) who decide to take their lives, they too believe that no help can free them from this agony. Gloria had said that she will be in a better place after she is gone. How does she know this? Those who commit murder do not go to heaven unless they repent of that sin. So before she decides that she wants to live in hell for eternity, she should reconsider ending her own life. Do some research on heaven and hell and how we can get to each because living in hell for all eternity is more difficult than living on this earth in pain for even 80 years. Knowing about the afterlife is as important as finding out about the method to help you die with dignity.

I agree with you completely. I know so many people who feel that they are denied the right to experience old age without the thought of a painful death hanging over them. Then there are others who fear death and will hold on till their last breath. Both groups should have the right to choose which way they want to die while they still have their faculties. The courts could so easily legislate terms that would protect us all if only they would put compassion into their decisions. My heart goes out to you.

I am 86. I am Professor Emeritus, Biology, at Athabasca University, Edmonton, AB. I have completed all of my worldly duties. I have been on dialysis for seven years. Because of dialysis, I continue to live a reasonably good life. I am sound of mind. I still read and write regularly. I strongly believe that I have the right to end my life when my body can no longer survive without considerable medical intervention. When that stage is reached, I will refuse dialysis. I can then expect to die in 7-10 days. My question is: When I refuse dialysis, everyone concerned will know that I will die within 7-10 days. Then, why make me suffer for 7-10 days?! At that stage, the medical profession should assist me to die peacefully and with dignity.

I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE RIGHT TO DIE, WHEN WE CHOOSE,
AT THE AGE OF 57, I HAVE PAINFUL ARTHRITIS AND LUPUS.
WHEN THE TIME COMES, I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO CHOOSE
WHEN AND WHERE I CAN DIE.
I SURE HOPE YOU SUCEED.
SINCERELY
BETTY

The idea of dying with dignity is not new to me. I am from the Netherlands. It is high time to legalize doctor assisted end of live here in Canada. I know it will be years before we catch up to Europe in this matter. Keep after it.
